What she thought
We took the métro to Brooklyn Café since the weather in Montréal had turned a little too cold for me to bike. The day was sunny with a cold, bity wind but the short walk from métro Rosemont was pleasant.
- Coffee: I ordered a latte and received it in what looked to be a vintage cup (see photo below). The espresso shot for the latte was pulled on an older Faema machine and the coffee, Caffé Fantini, is roasted by G.F.C.s.p.a., a well known coffee roaster in Rome. The latte was more of a typical Italian-style latte—no art and the foam just a bit bubbly. The foam did coat my cup as I drank the latte, allowing me to spoon up the remains at the end of the cup—something I love to do. The balance between coffee and milk tended more to the milk side as I continued to drink. The coffee was somewhat overextracted but I could taste the flavor I associate with strong Italian coffees.
- Seating: The seating at the café is varied and eclectic in a way. Outside in the front of the café are webbed lawn chairs. Outside in the back of the café is a deck area with built-in bench seating around the perimeter. During good weather, there are several wooden tables on the back deck, which is also covered, offering a respite from the hot Montréal sun. Inside the seating consists of bars and comfortable stools only, the reason being that Brooklyn Café is also an Atelier (workshop) and Showroom for some interesting and lovely mid-century modern furniture and décor. Of course, no one can sit on the showroom furniture as it is for sale.
- Atmosphere: Brooklyn Café is rather charming. I loved looking at the vintage furniture/décor, and the space itself is a calm oasis in a busy part of Montréal. The staff is friendly, and Nathalie, whose friends call her Brooklyn, is the café owner and an interior designer. She is engaging, magnanimous, and so fun to chat with and has a real desire to ensure her clients’ satisfaction. The food choices on the menu are interesting and inventive. Michel had Brooklyn Café’s take on the Korean dish “Bibimbap.” This vegetarian dish not only looked beautiful when served but was delightfully tasty as well.
Final Thoughts: Brooklyn Café offers its patrons a unique setting to enjoy a delicious and carefully prepared meal or snack.
