What she thought

I was surprised and confused when I found Méchant Café listed on the Indie Coffee Passport because I had never heard of it. We lived in Côtes-des-Neiges (CDN) for almost 3-1/2 years before we moved last year. When we visited the other day, I found out the reason: the café had opened a few months after we moved. Mystery solved.

The owner, a warm and personable fellow, poured our lattes. He was quite knowledgeable about the coffees he was serving. He offered us either Heartbreaker Expresso by Brooklyn-based Grumpy coffee roasters or a selection from Trebilcock coffee from Ontario. (The decaf served at Méchant is also by Trebilcock.) I took the Grumpy coffee since I liked the name, the look of the logo, and, yes, I was always a big fan of Oscar the Grouch!

  • Coffee: The coffee in my latte had really good flavor and the latte art was beautiful as you can see from the photo above. The foam, however, did not coat the cup or seem thick at the bottom of the cup when I finished my latte. So this coffee was a no-spoon-necessary latte, which is the reason I gave it 4 stars.
  • Seating: Although the café looks small from the outside, it boasts a small terrace area, shared with one or two other storefront restaurants, and a reasonably sized seating area inside. There is a bar and a table or two near the window and more seating in the back.
  • Atmosphere: When we visited, I saw people seated on the terrace and in the various seating areas inside. I didn’t notice that the café interior was particularly noisy, making it feel a bit library- or retreat-like. I did notice that the café lighting seemed somewhat subdued since the only natural light comes through the one window. Outside on the terrace is a different story, though. Lacombe Street hosts the métro, offices, apartments, many restaurants, and a bar or two. Lots of colorful characters coming and going if that’s your scene.

Final thoughts: I will certainly visit Méchant Café any time I am in CDN. I do think the café may fill up when University of Montréal is in session, so I may have to take my cafe latte to go.
