Update 2015
Our visit to Le Moineau Masqué this year with rather quick partly due to the fact that the café was quite full. (A good thing for a café as long as those who stay for a long time remember to support the café during their stay!) The barista serving our cappuccinos did a good job pouring them. The coffee was sweet with a delicate coffee flavor, somewhat unusual for a cappuccino using Old School Espresso. I chose a piece of the banana/chocolate chip/walnut bread that was more nutty than banana-y—fine with me since I love walnuts. Although we missed seeing and chatting with Fanny (the owner), Le Moineau Masqué remains a charming place to visit!
2014 Review
I happen to love birds, so I was excited to visit this café. Le Moineau Masqué (The Masked Sparrow) offers a delightful spot to indulge in a latte, grab a bite to eat, read a book, or just unwind during a hectic day. Fanny Godey, the owner-barrista who hails from France, is friendly and seems to really enjoy her café, the neighborhood, and her customers. She makes her hot espresso drinks with beans roasted by 49th Parallel (Old School Espresso) or by Saint-Henri micro-torréfacteur (Godshot). The café’s logo is so adorable, and the owner told us that she changes the scene around the little masked sparrow each month to reflect the seasons, holidays, etc.
- Coffee: Today I was served a latte using the Old School Espresso beans, a roast I love. As you can see below, the art was lovely. The latte was a bit more milky that I prefer. The foam seemed somewhat thin and was totally incorporated into the coffee as I drank the latte. When I finished, there was no foam around the edge of the cup or at the bottom for me to scoop up with the spoon.
- Seating: The café feels very roomy with its two large rustic wooden tables with 4 chairs each, a smaller table—which reminded me of a computer desk—with two chairs on either side, and a comfortable-looking couch. Outside there is a charming garden area—Le Jardin du Moineau—that offers seating at several long tables with chairs and includes a small kidlet-sized picnic table à la Playschool.
- Atmosphere: Calm, soothing, pleasant, and refreshing are just a few of the adjectives I would use to describe the atmosphere at Le Moineau Masqué. Whether you are sitting inside savoring your latte while being surrounded by charming décor and tasteful music or perched outside enjoying a respite from the sun, your senses bathed in the fragrance of flowering trees and the rustling of gently blowing leaves, this café provides the perfect place for a “coffee break.”
Final Thoughts: Le Moineau Masqué is a true neighborhood café, providing lovely lattes, a quiet corner, and a friendly and thoughtful owner: a veritable café jewel in the Plateau.
